The Sierra Vista Police Department evacuated the area surrounding the Goodwill Thrift Store and Donation Center, located at 2105 E. Fry Blvd., on Saturday afternoon after a suspicious device was discovered at the store.

The device was found by store employees when they emptied a donation bin at about 1:20 p.m. Upon their arrival, Sierra Vista Police Department officers observed the device and decided to evacuate the Cochise Plaza Shopping Center to ensure public safety while the Arizona Department of Public Safety and Pima County Sheriff’s Office bomb squads were contacted and responded for further investigation. Adjacent streets were also closed.

After employing the use of a K9 and robot, the bomb squads determined the suspicious device was a fake.

The Sierra Vista Police Department would like to thank the public for cooperating during the incident as law enforcement took precautions to ensure everyone stayed safe.
