What doesn't belong down the drain: Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG)

While butter and other fats, oils, and grease are tasty on your food, they DO NOT belong down the drain!

FOG 4

While it might not seem like a problem to discard fats, oils, and grease or FOG down the drain, it creates large problems for the City's sanitary sewer line. If poured down the drain, FOG builds up inside the sewer lines and creates sewer blockages, know as greesebergs.

If fats, oils, and grease can't be poured down the drain, how can I discard them?

Pour any excess fats, oils, or grease (such as bacon grease) into a leak-proof container and recycle it at the City of Sierra Vista Compost Center located at 7201 AZ-90, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635. PLEASEPablo FOG_1 Disposing of Grease NOTE: the City Compost Center only accepts FOG from residents who live within the City Limits. It does not accept FOG from commercial grease traps.

Wipe away any excess fat, oil, and grease residue on dishes, utensils, pots, and pans before washing them in the sink or dishwasher. This removes the oily residue that will clog the sewer line.

The City Compost Center is open from 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday (closed Wednesday and Sunday). Got questions? Call the Public Works Department at (520) 458-5775.
