Volunteers Needed: Help Install Smoke Alarms in Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services is seeking community volunteers to assist with its Smoke Alarm Installation Program.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of death in a home fire in half. Through scheduled appointment days, our volunteers visit homes throughout the City to install and replace smoke detectors at no cost to residents.

We need your help to reach more homes and keep our community safe! You can access application forms at the bottom of this page.

How the Program Works

Residents can call Fire Station 3 at (520) 417-4400 to schedule an appointment.

On designated installation days, volunteers visit those homes to:

  • Install new battery-operated smoke alarms
  • Replace expired units
  • Change batteries
  • Provide basic home fire safety information

Appointments are scheduled in advance, and volunteers serve multiple homes in a single day. No prior experience is required. SVF&MS provides:

  • Brief training and safety orientation
  • All tools and installation materials
  • Team assignments with city vehicle

Who Can Volunteer?

We welcome:

  • Adult community members
  • Civic and service organizations
  • High school and college students  (parental consent required if under 18)
  • Local businesses
  • Faith-based groups

Volunteer Schedule

Smoke alarm installation days are scheduled periodically throughout the year, typically lasting 3–4 hours. Volunteers will be notified in advance of upcoming dates and assigned locations.

Why it Matters

Most fire fatalities occur in homes without working smoke alarms. A properly installed, functioning alarm provides early warning that gives families critical time to escape.

By volunteering, you are directly helping protect lives in Sierra Vista.

How to Volunteer

To volunteer please fill out an adult volunteer application or a teen volunteer application and drop it off at Fire Station 3, located at 675 Guilio Cesare Drive. Please bring your driver’s license, or government identification if you don’t have a driver’s license. A volunteer background check will be completed by the City's Human Resources Department to complete the process.

Together, we can make sure every home in our community has the protection it deserves!
