The Region’s Retail Hub
Sierra Vista’s retail market serves an area two and a half times its population and accounts for two thirds of Cochise County’s retail sales. The City’s close proximity to Mexico broadly widens the retail market, with Mexican visitors spending $186.4 million annually in Cochise County. Of this, 55 percent is spent in retail stores, 24.1 percent in grocery outlets and 7.3 percent in restaurants. Still, Sierra Vista is an underserved retail market with purchasers going outside of the area for big-ticket items like electronics and furniture.
Sierra Vista is home to the only indoor shopping mall south of Tucson. The Mall at Sierra Vista offers more than 50 stores, including national chains such as Dillard's, Famous Footwear, Kay Jewelers, and Hibbett Sports, as well as a full food court and cineplex. In recent years, the city has welcomed a number of major retail outlets, including a Wal-Mart Supercenter, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and Cal-Ranch. The City of Sierra Vista's Economic Development Division is committed to the continued growth and development of retail businesses and looks forward to sharing insight as to needs of the area.
The City is also actively working to support growth and development of small local retailers through its West Sierra Vista Partnership Program. The matching grant opportunity, approaching its 5th year, is available to new and existing businesses located in the West Sierra Vista Redevelopment Area and supports projects such as facade renovation, demolition, interior renovations, signage, code compliance renovations, utilities, and public art.
