Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Certification classes are held throughout the year. Holding current certifications are no longer a prerequisite for employment as a lifeguard at The Cove. 

Interested? Apply online, interview and pre-test. When you pass the pre-test, you will be scheduled for a Certification course. Certifications you will earn include Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for professional Rescuers, First Aid, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Water Park skills. 

To learn more, email TheCove@SierraVistaAZ.gov or call (520) 417-4800. Successful candidates who are hired by The Cove and completes the Red Cross Lifeguard course will have the course fee paid for them in exchange for a 12-month employment commitment. See current openings.

Prerequisites

  • 16 years of age or older.
  • Active part-time lifeguard application with the City of Sierra Vista.
  • Must successfully pass a swim pretest to register for the lifeguard class. In order to pass the swim test, applicants must be able to:
    • Swim 200 yards of front crawl or breast stroke in correct form with endurance;
    • Swim to and retrieve a 10-pound weight from a depth of 8 feet of water, then return to the starting point on your back with the weight in 1 minute, 40 seconds;
    • Tread water for 2 minutes without using your arms.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Prep Classes

Come make a splash with us! Do you want to be a lifeguard, but you aren't sure if your swimming skills are up to the task, then this class will be perfect for you.  

The Cove is offering free American Red Cross Lifeguard Prep Classes for individuals 15 years of age or older that would like to see if they have what it takes to become a lifeguard.  

This course is for those that are comfortable in the water and are able to swim in the deep end of the pool. This course will focus on the essential swim skills needed for the lifeguard pre-test, you will also learn how to perfect your techniques, build endurance and gain confidence. 

Classes will be held March 9th through March 12th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, if you want to see if you have what it takes and are ready learn some skills to become a lifeguard call the Cove at (520) 417- 4800 to register, registration starts Monday February 9th.
