Three people died in a two-vehicle head-on collision that occurred on the Highway 90 Bypass, just west of 7th Street, at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Witnesses who remained on scene reported that a 2005 Red Mitsubishi SUV drifted into oncoming traffic while traveling eastbound on the highway. It collided with a 2004 Black Chevrolet pickup truck that was traveling westbound. Although SVPD and Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services personnel attempted to provide aid, all three people involved in the incident died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV has been identified as 49-year-old Huachuca City resident Timothy David Straight. The identities of the driver and passenger of the pickup truck will not be released until the police department is able to notify next of kin.

SVPD’s investigation into the collision is still ongoing and the cause of the accident has not been determined. Early indications show that neither vehicle was traveling at excessive speed. The Arizona Department of Highway Safety assisted with the initial investigation at the scene.

The Highway 90 Bypass was closed to all traffic from Buffalo Soldier Trail to 7th Street once police responded to the scene at about 1:02 p.m. and it remained closed until 4:17 p.m.
