Free Film Showing at Cochise College

February 14 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

In honor of Black History Month, Cochise College will offer a series of multicultural films. The Great Debaters, a film inspired by a true story of a black debate team will be shown in the Horace Steele Room located in the Library on Sierra Vista Campus. The public is invited to this free event. Light refreshments will be provided.

The film depicts how Melvin B. Tolson, professor, poet, and social activist, inspired his students at Wiley College, a small black college in Texas, to form a debate team in 1935. This successful team eventually challenged Harvard in the national debate championship.
Roger Ebert’s critique calls the film “one of the year’s best films.” He continues by stating that education was the team’s “best way out of the morass of racism and discrimination.”

According to The New York Times, the film’s achievements are its “steadfast humanity, its literacy, its passionate belief in education, its faith that history teaches invaluable lessons.” In summary, the film “radiates with a nobility of spirit.”

Notable actors are Forest Whitaker and Denzel Washington, who also directed the film.
The film is rated PG-13 and is 126 minutes long. This event is sponsored by Cochise College’s Humanities/Fine Arts Department and the Multicultural Film Series. For more information, contact Tanya Biami at (520) 515-5316.
