The Southeastern Arizona DUI Task Force cited employees at six businesses in Cochise County during a Covert Underage Buyers detail conducted in cooperation with the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control on Friday, April 14.

The task force targeted 36 businesses in the Sierra Vista and Whetstone areas based on previous enforcement of liquor violations, complaints from citizens, and other factors. Four teams of Sierra Vista Police Department officers, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and CUBs, underage volunteers who attempt to purchase alcohol, assisted with the operation. The following businesses sold or furnished alcohol to the underage CUBs and were appropriately charged:

  • The Horned Toad                                 526 W. Fry Blvd., Sierra Vista
  • Sunset Grill                                          2047 S. Hwy 92, Sierra Vista
  • Chili’s Grill & Bar                                  4001 E. Hwy 90, Sierra Vista
  • Shell Gas Station                                    2222 N. Hwy 90, Whetstone
  • Buffalo Soldier Shell                            5200 E. Hwy 90, Sierra Vista
  • Hana Tokyo Restaurant & Bar            1633 S. Hwy 92, Sierra Vista

The remaining businesses acted appropriately by checking the CUB’s identification card, which clearly indicated he or she was under 21.

“We hope these citations serve as a reminder to local businesses that serving alcohol to minors is an avoidable mistake. Checking someone’s identification when they buy alcohol is a responsibility that should never be overlooked,” says Cpl. Tim Wachtel, the Sierra Vista Police Department’s CUB program coordinator.
