Save the Santas

The much-loved display of Old World Santas that normally appears in Veterans Memorial Park is on hiatus this year.  Despite efforts to maintain it, the plywood construction has deteriorated beyond usability.

The City is working to reproduce the original Santa artwork on high-performance vinyl, which will be mounted to 4-foot by 8-foot weather-resistant aluminum substrate, creating a display that should last for decades.  The display will be manufactured by a local company, which can make each new Santa for $550.  With your help, the Old World Santas will return to Veterans Memorial Park for the 2019 holiday season.

Please consider making a donation of $550 to sponsor a Santa. Smaller donations are also welcome! If you would like to sponsor a specific Santa, just let us know the name and we'll add funds to it's sponsorship. Make a donation of $100 or more and we'll add your name (or the name of your business or loved one) to the Santa's sponsorship and on the display.

Former Sierra Vista mayor Tom Hessler and his wife Nancy spearheaded the effort, working with local artists Susan Bell, Sue Ann Vannoy, and Laura Sudduth to bring the 53 Santas--and magic of the holiday season--to life. The Santas, which made their debut in 2006, represent many different countries, much like Sierra Vista's citizenry, and are accompanied by a short narrative or poem that tells the story of that particular Santa.

Each year, Sierra Vista families meander through the display, snapping photos of their kids alongside a favorite Old World Santa, creating a holiday legacy of their childrens' growth. But the Santas aren't on display this year. Time and weather have taken a toll on the original acrylic-and-plywood construction.

The original artwork is below, each with a unique name and number. Pick the Santa you'd like to sponsor and we'll add your name or business name to the artwork. You can reserve your Santa by calling the Sierra Vista Public Affairs Office at (520) 439-2191, or email Marketing & Public Affairs Manager Judy Hector. (Explorer users, you may not see all the Santas. We recommend viewing with the Chrome browser.)

Please make checks payable to the City of Sierra Vista. Drop off or mail your check to City Hall, 1011 N. Coronado Drive, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635.  Please include "Save the Santas" on the memo line.

Thank you for your support!
