The Sierra Vista Police Department is investigating a shooting that resulted in the death of one woman and a dog, and an injury to another individual.
On Wednesday, May 20, at about 2 p.m., Southeastern Arizona Communications received several calls from residents reporting a gunshot victim in an apartment complex on the 300 block of 7th Street.
Officers responded to the area and identified a victim on the steps of an apartment building with a gunshot injury to his hand. Officers also observed a second lifeless victim lying on the floor of an apartment on the 2nd floor of the building. When officers entered the apartment, they also found a dog that sustained a gunshot wound.
Officers cleared the apartment and the area was secured as a crime scene. The initial victim was transported by ambulance to Canyon Vista Medical Center for treatment. The dog was transported by Animal Control Officers for medical treatment but later died.
Responding detectives interviewed witnesses, obtained a search warrant for the apartment, and secured evidence related to the investigation, including numerous weapons and drug paraphernalia.
The deceased woman was identified as 43-year-old Calisha Schafer of Sierra Vista.
The investigation into the death of Schafer and the dog, as well as the gunshot injury to the other resident, is ongoing. At this time, there are no outstanding suspects related to this incident.
