The Sierra Vista Police Department arrested multiple people last evening after a high-speed pursuit through Sierra Vista neighborhoods that continued beyond the City.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, at about 8:20 p.m., a Sierra Vista police officer initiated a traffic stop on a black hatchback vehicle for speeding. The driver failed to yield and led officers on a pursuit through neighborhoods in the City reaching speeds up to 80 miles per hour before fleeing northbound along Highway 90 towards Benson. Once on the highway, the driver increased speeds up to 115 miles per hour.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, Huachuca City Police Department, and Benson Police Department assisted SVPD during the pursuit. Near mile post 291, Benson police officers were able to position spike strips which damaged the fleeing vehicle’s tires bringing it to a controlled stop and ending the pursuit.
The vehicle was occupied by the driver and three passengers, and all occupants were taken into custody. The driver was charged with unlawful flight from pursuing law enforcement, excessive speeds, endangerment, reckless driving, and having an open alcohol container in a vehicle and booked into the Cochise County Jail.
Two adult passengers under the age of 21 were arrested for having an open alcohol container in a vehicle, underage possession of alcohol, and underage consumption of alcohol. A juvenile passenger was referred for having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
