Portion of Fry Boulevard scheduled to close on April 7

A small portion of Fry Boulevard near the Highway 90/92 intersection is tentatively scheduled to close on Monday, April 7, for work on a sewer line that runs beneath the street.
That Monday, Fry Boulevard is scheduled close to all traffic between the driveway leading into Schlotzsky’s parking lot and the Highway 90/92 intersection. The closure will continue for about two and a half weeks while crews replace a clay sewer interceptor that runs underneath Fry Boulevard immediately west of the Highway 90/92 intersection. The sewer interceptor has begun to sag, requiring frequent maintenance to clear blockages. Failure of this sewer interceptor could create environmental hazards and cause damage to residential and commercial properties.
Motorist traveling in this area should expect delays and are urged to find an alternative route during the closure. A detour will be in place rerouting traffic via Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway and Avenida Escuela.
All business driveways in the area, except for one, will remain open and there will be no interruption to sewer services. The driveway scheduled for closure is located immediately south of the Highway 90/92 intersection near Chase Bank. The next driveway south on Highway 92 will remain open as an alternative access to Chase Bank and the shopping center.
Residents can expect to see crews start work in preparation of the closure the week of March 31. Motorists can also expect a short delay at the Highway 90/92 intersection that week as crews switch the traffic signal to a new uninterruptable power supply and service meter. That work is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, April 3, or Friday, April 4. The Sierra Vista Police Department will be on site to direct traffic when the signal goes dark for the switch over.
To avoid further interruption or cutting into new pavement, the sewer project and signal upgrade are being expedited so work can be completed before the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT’s) State Route 90 pavement project reaches the intersection. Construction on Highway 90 is expected to reach the intersection soon after the completion of the sewer project.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we make this critical repair to avoid bigger issues should the sewer line fail,” City Capital Improvements Project and Development Manager Irene Zuniga says. “We know our residents have been eagerly awaiting the Highway 90 roadway repairs and we want to ensure that this sewer line work is completed before the ADOT project reaches the intersection.”
Expect Vista Transit delays
During the closure, the Pink transit route will have 40-minute service instead of 30-minute service at each stop. Other routes may also have unforeseen delays and passengers should be prepared for longer commutes. Service at the Sonic transit stop will be suspended during this time. Passengers are urged to use other stops nearby including Bank of America, Food City, and Walmart. Once work is completed, transit will return to normal routes and times.
