Starting Friday, March 1, the Sierra Vista Police Department will begin enhanced enforcement of City leash laws in public places.
During otherwise unassigned time, law enforcement officers will patrol parks, sports fields, and other public spaces frequented by pet owners to issue warnings or citations to individuals with unleashed dogs. According to City ordinance, dog owners must use a leash or other physical restraint and maintain control of their dog in public areas.
Failing to follow the law may result in citations and escalating costs with multiple offenses. First offense citations are $40 to $75; second offenses are $75 to $150; and third offense violations are $150 to $250. All offenses may also include restitution if unleashed dogs cause damage or injury.
“Having an unleashed dog in public spaces can be dangerous for the dog and others,” SVPD Cpl. Scott Borgstadt says. “Leashing your dog helps keep everyone safe.”
In addition, residents should be aware that City ordinance prohibits dogs from sports fields whether leashed or not. Violation of this ordinance may also result in citation.
