Green Waste & Compost
Since 1994, the City has operated a successful and award-winning municipal compost operation. Through the program, the City diverts 35 percent—4,000 tons—of the community’s yard waste from the landfill each year. The yard waste is converted to high-quality compost and mulch, and made available for sale at a fraction of the retail value.
Compost is closed for the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas and hours may differ throughout the year due to Federal Holidays. Please contact Public works at (520) 458-5775 for current hours of operation.
Drop Off Your Green Waste
Drop off your green waste* at the compost facility, located next to the County transfer station, 7201 E Highway 90 (mile marker 325).
*Green waste is: grass clippings, tree and shrub trimmings, weeds, cactus, succulents, and branches up to 15 inches wide and 5 feet long. The compost facility cannot accept trash, food waste, dirt, rocks, tree stumps, palm leaves, lumber, metal, or construction and demolition waste. These items are prohibited in compost facilities by law.
Fees: City sanitation customers can drop off materials at no charge as the cost to provide this service is built in to the refuse fees. Bring a copy of your current City of Sierra Vista sanitation bill to use this special service. Bills from other refuse haulers (Waste Management, Waste Disposal, or other private service) a will not be accepted.
Non-city residential customers can drop off compost materials for $15 per pickup truck load and $2 for each additional cubic yard.
Commercial users can drop off compost materials for $15 per pickup truck load and $2 for each additional cubic yard.
Due to the poisonous compound, oleandrin, present in oleander, that is highly toxic to humans and animals, the composting process is very particular and time consuming to ensure toxicity is reduced to safe levels. Because of this, we do not accept oleander at our Compost Facility at this time. It is suggested that oleander be discarded at the Cochise County Transfer Station. It is important to note, that oleander should not be burned, as the smoke is also toxic.
