Coming Soon: Cochise County Unearthed
Exhibit opens June 6!

Unearthed logoJourney through the layers of Arizona’s deep past in this upcoming exhibit! Cochise County Unearthed explores the science of discovery through archaeology and paleontology, showcasing how artifacts and fossils help us understand past life and cultures. From the towering giants of the Mesozoic Era to the skilled artisans of the early Holocene, Cochise County Unearthed peels back the desert floor to reveal the ancient life that once walked this land.

Start your exploration in the age of dinosaurs with impressive replicas of a Brontosaurus footprint, a Triceratops frill, and a rare Sauropod egg. Then transition into the Ice Age to come face-to-face with detailed replicas of formidable predators like the Saber tooth Cat and Short-faced Bear. Compare these giants with the skeletal remains of modern-day bison, bears, tortoise, javelina, and more.

The journey continues into the human story, featuring authentic Native American artifacts recovered from local archaeological sites. Examine the craftsmanship of spearheads and spindle whorls that tell the story of some of the region’s first inhabitants.

Discover the secrets buried right beneath your feet—what will you find when you look beneath the surface?

Sierra Vista Through the Ages

Dino leg and decal croppedThe main exhibit is Sierra Vista Through the Ages, which invites visitors to explore the Sierra Vista area’s natural and cultural history from prehistoric times through the present. See early fossils, indigenous artifacts, and items from the settlement of Sierra Vista and beyond—including the World’s First McDonald’s Drive-Thru Window!  You’ll also be able to explore even more of
Sierra Vista’s history at a new kiosk.

  Journey Stories

The current temporary exhibit brings out banners developed as a companion exhibit to the Smithsonian Journey Stories traveling exhibition. The banners highlight some of the early groups that journey to Sierra Vista and the surrounding area and the community's early development.
