The Sierra Vista Public Library will host A Rockin’ Summer Reading Kickoff on Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to noon, launching its annual Summer Reading Program, which features activities, prizes, and events for all ages.
This year’s program aligns with the national theme of “Libraries Rock!” Readers will be able to register starting May 19 at the kickoff event or by going online at SierraVista.AZSummerReading.org. Activities at the free kickoff event will include making pet rocks and face painting. Participants will also be able to check out police, fire, and refuse vehicles.
The Summer Reading Program can help kids keep their minds active while on break from school. This can prevent the so-called “summer slide” sometimes seen in reading test scores following summer vacation. The program is offered with the support of the Friends of the Sierra Vista Public Library and includes a variety of free activities and events. People of all ages can also tackle reading goals for a chance to earn prizes!
“Libraries play a significant role in keeping children reading and learning over summer break, which helps set them up for success in school and life,” says Emily Scherrer, library manager. “But it’s also a great time for teens and adults to visit the library, experience some of our special events, and tackle their own reading program goals.”
All Summer Reading Program events and activities are free. The program will run from Saturday, May 19, through Saturday, July 28. Registration is all online this year and computers will be available at the kickoff event so participants can sign up on site.
More information about upcoming events is available at the library, will be shared on the “Sierra Vista Public Library” Facebook page, and will be posted to the event calendar available at www.SierraVistaAZ.gov.
