The City of Sierra Vista has selected Tony Boone to serve in its economic development manager position beginning on Monday, July 31.
With his extensive community connections and broad history with the U.S. Army, Boone brings a wealth of experience regarding how the City can capitalize on the region’s greatest economic engine, Fort Huachuca. Boone served as Fort Huachuca’s garrison commander from May, 2014, through June, 2016, and recently retired from the military after a distinguished 24 year career.
“At a time when Sierra Vista is looking to broaden non-DoD business among the area’s defense contractors, while also ensuring the community supports ongoing missions and their potential expansion on the fort, Tony brings a depth of experience to the City that we don’t currently have,” City Manager Chuck Potucek says.
“He chose Sierra Vista as his home after retiring from the military. That’s a testament to his dedication to the community. He’s also passionate about public service. These traits, paired with his considerable expertise, will make him an invaluable member of our City’s economic development team,” Potucek says.
As garrison commander, Boone oversaw and directed a workforce of more than 1,300 personnel with an operating budget of about $80 million covering over 100,000 acres. He served as chief executive for all installation business operations and real estate and also oversaw public works, housing, family programs, public safety, and other garrison functions.
Boone coordinated with more than 40 military and civilian organizations across the installation to ensure their missions were successful, from infrastructure requirements to program support. He has held a number of other Army management assignments where he developed skills in strategic planning, logistics, negotiation, and other abilities that will benefit the City and community in this role.
“I’m honored to serve Sierra Vista in this new capacity. I look forward to working with the City staff, council, and local partners to ensure our community continues to thrive,” Boone says.
Boone holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, a Master of Science degree in Administration from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Boone is a Perpetual Member of the Military Order of the World Wars and a 2017 Inductee of the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame.
