We encourage citizens to change out their smoke detector batteries every 6 months and to change the actual smoke detectors every 5-10 years. A monthly test of your detectors is a good idea too. This can be accomplished by pressing and holding the “test” button on a detector.
For those who are unable to check their detectors themselves, Sierra Vista Fire and Medical and the Citizen’s Fire Academy Alumni (CFAA) offer free smoke detector checks and battery replacement. Every third Saturday of each month, the CFAA respond to requests to have smoke detector batteries changed. The program is designed for the elderly that need help replacing their battery, low-income individuals who cannot afford batteries, or the physically or mentally disabled that are unable to change their smoke detector battery.
To schedule an appointment for the CFAA to come out to your home and change your smoke detector batteries, or to have a troublesome detector checked, please call Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services Station 1 at (520) 458-3319 or click here to complete the form on the bottom of the page.
