Sierra Vista, AZ.  08/23/16. It’s time to dig into some clay in support of local food banks at the second bowl-a-thon held to prepare for the Ninth Sierra Vista Empty Bowls Project fundraiser this fall.

The bowl-a-thon will take place on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pottery Studio @ Sierra Vista located inside the Oscar Yrun Community Center. Participants must arrive before 3 p.m. to make a bowl. The bowls will be given away in exchange for donations during the Sierra Vista Empty Bowls Project fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The free event offers participants of all skill levels an opportunity to make a hand-built slab bowl, while experienced potters will be creating bowls on the pottery wheel throughout the day. Children under 10 can make bowls with the help of a parent.

At the first 2016 bowl-a-thon, 214 beautiful bowls were created in support of the annual fundraiser and organizers hope to reach a goal of creating 1,800 bowls this year. Last year the event raised nearly $16,000 for area food banks.

Clay will be provided by the studio and a bratwurst potluck will be shared by studio volunteers and participants, while supplies last. For more information about the event, contact Karl Hallsten at (520) 678-5544 or Judy Fitzsimmons at (520) 220-2456.
